Reading is the whetstone of quality writing.
It is a withstanding principle in philosophy which says, "You cannot give what you don't have." In connection with in writing, no one can scribble a well-written article without something whatsoever to write. What then follows are the lists of the outstanding effects of reading to writing.
1. Enhance the vocabulary skill.
It sounds so a boring writing with too many words repeated. To avoid this uncatchy way of writing, all you have to do is to wander the word world that only books offer. Promise you, having the plethora of vocabulary is the magic of writing you need to know.
2. Improve the writing style.
Sugar, spice, and everything nice. Who wishes not to have a writing skill which is appealing to the readers? Most do if not all, right? The words are so sweet if used correctly in a composition. In the same manner, a spicy style leaves the reader to scroll down your write-up until the last word. Just to share, I, as a writer wish my reader to read my work up to the last drop of the word. This is my simple reward as a writer. So I manage to improve my style to meet the satisfaction of my readers. What I always do? I always read.
3. Power up the grammar.
Grammatical mistakes demean your reputation as a writer. This is the fundamental skill a writer should have. I know this is quite hard to master. But, a little scoop of 15-minute reading habit can crop way better than before your grammar.
4. Build up a strong sentence construction.
A mixture of inverted and not so sentences, and of short and long sentences in a composition is as well important in writing. I remember one of my instructors in English said that a writer should know how to play the length of the sentences, and should know how to arrange the words without damaging the grammar rules. I didn't know how at first. But, I read and read. I learned then.
Reading is the whetstone of writing. By reading, you learn the techniques of the famous writers in the world and use them in your writing. In addition, you also gain ideas of writing style and topics you need for to kick-start your writing. Reading sharpens your writing skill. It is the whetstone of writing.
